Carolyn Bremer came to composition on the heels of intensive training as a bassist. Experience as a performer in
orchestras, wind ensembles, chamber ensembles, big bands, rock
bands, improvisation ensembles, experimental groups, and with live
electronics has enhanced her approach to composition. A native of
Santa Monica, she received her Ph.D. in composition from UCSB and
was Chair of Composition at the University of Oklahoma from
1991-2000.
Her catalogue contains works based on feminist symbolism (The Four
Faces of Eve), the Clarence Thomas Confirmation Hearings (I Have a
Nightmare), baseball (Early Light and Tinker to Evers to Chance),
and popular culture (It Makes Me Nervewracking). The Houston
Symphony, Stockholm’s KammarensembleN, the Oklahoma City
Philharmonic, San Francisco-based Earplay!, Anacapa Quartet,
Kentucky Chamber Players, Synchronia, Monarch Brass Ensemble,
Missoula Symphony, and Trio Contraste are among the professional
ensembles to perform her works.
