Solo Competition

A solo brass competition for professional and student women and men of all ages.

INSTRUMENT CATEGORIES:
Horn, Trumpet, Trombone, Bass Trombone, Euphonium and Tuba

PRIZES:
Two prizes awarded in each of the six instrument categories.
First Prize: $2,000
Second Prize: $1,000
All prizes awarded solely within the judges’ discretion.

WHEN and WHERE:
The solo competition will be held at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music in Cincinnati, Ohio on June 27, 2000 (Preliminary Rounds) and June 28-30, 2000 (Final Rounds). Competitors will need to arrive by June 26 if they choose to rehearse with an IWBC accompanist; all participants in the solo competition must be registered conference attendees.

Due to the late mailing of the Brochure, we've extended the competition registration deadline to May 15, 2000.

Competition Applications will be accepted February 15 through May 15, 2000. No applications will be accepted before or after these dates. There will be a limited number of candidates per instrument category who will be accepted on a first come first serve basis determined by the postmark on the envelope containing the competition application.

Competition applications must include:
1. Registration Form
2. Competition Deposit of $50 (This deposit reserves your spot in the competition and will be returned to you upon completion of the competition.)
3. Conference Fee (IWBC Members $150, Senior/Student Non-Members $170 and Non-Members $180)*

NOTE: For administrative purposes, please include two separate checks, one for the Conference Fee and one for the Competition Deposit. The Deposit check of $50 will be returned upon completion of the competition.

REPERTOIRE & ACCOMPANISTS:
Competitors need to prepare the two required pieces for the preliminaries and choose one composition from the finals list.

An accompanist will be made available through the conference or you may provide your own accompanist at your own expense. No financial credit will be given if you choose to provide your own accompanist. A one-hour rehearsal with an accompanist will be provided by the IWBC; an additional hour can be added for a fee paid in advance.

ACCOMPANIST COORDINATOR

Pianist Sandra Rivers has concertized throughout the world. She has appeared at the Mostly Mozart Festival at Lincoln Center, Tanglewood, the Schleswig-Holstein Festival, Aspen, the Kennedy Center and on Great Performers’ Series at Lincoln Center. Ms. Rivers is also widely known for her concert partnerships with many of the world’s leading soloists, including Itzhak Perlman, Kathleen Battle, Gil Shaham, Joshua Bell, Cho-Liang Lin, Sarah Chang and Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg.
